Disclosure: this site is made by the MATCHUPS team. Facts about other apps come from their own pages, checked in November 2026.

Both apps can run a league for free. They are built for different leagues.

We make MATCHUPS. Everything about Squabbit comes from its own pricing page and App Store listing, checked in November 2026.

The short answer

  • Pick Squabbit for a league of any size that wants season standings, handicaps and a path to pro league tools.
  • Pick MATCHUPS for a small friends league of up to 10 on iPhone that wants casual formats and a fun on-course experience.

Free plans

Squabbit's free plan is wide. Its pricing page lists unlimited players, unlimited tournaments, leagues and clubs, every game format, live leaderboards and handicaps, group chat for every event, and season-long league standings.

MATCHUPS leagues are free up to 10 players. That covers most small friend groups.

Squabbit's League Pro plan is $249.99 a year. It lists season-long league stats, league sponsors on leaderboards, a season schedule builder, private draft events, bulk publishing, scheduled announcements and multiple league admins.

That is for leagues that run all year with a real organizer.

MATCHUPS does not sell a league admin plan like that. It is built for small groups that want to play, not manage.

Formats

Squabbit lists every game format and scoring type on its free plan, including Stableford.

MATCHUPS scores Stroke, Match, Best Ball, Scramble, Skins, High/Low and Low/Low, plus the Hammer side game. No Stableford, Nassau or Wolf.

If your league plays Stableford points, choose Squabbit.

Handicaps

Squabbit lists handicaps on its free plan and custom league handicaps with substitute support among its league features.

MATCHUPS does not connect to GHIN.

On the course

MATCHUPS puts its effort into the round. Built-in GPS. Live scoring. A lock-screen scoreboard. Apple Watch support.

Squabbit's free plan lists GPS distances, digital scorecards and casual rounds with shot tracking.

A thought on simplicity

Bigger tools can do more. They can also ask more of the organizer. If your league is eight friends on a Wednesday, simple may be better. If it is 40 players and a waitlist, power matters.

What MATCHUPS does not do

No Android. No Nassau, Wolf or Stableford. No GHIN sync. Free leagues are capped at 10 players.

Bottom line

Big or growing league, handicaps, Stableford: Squabbit. Small friends league on iPhone: MATCHUPS.
