A good league schedule does two jobs. It tells people where to be. And it builds a story that ends with a big final night.

Here is a 12-week template you can copy. It works for 8 to 16 players. Adjust it for your group.

The shape of a season

Think of the season in four parts.

  1. Opening weeks. Easy formats. Everyone gets settled.
  2. Middle weeks. The grind. Points pile up.
  3. The stretch. Higher stakes. A makeup week for rainouts.
  4. The finish. Playoffs and a final night.

Why this order works

Start easy

Week one is about getting everyone comfortable. Stroke play is simple. It also gives you fresh scores to check handicaps.

Mix team weeks in

Team weeks keep weaker players engaged. A good partner can carry them. A scramble week in week four lifts the mood before the grind.

Build in a makeup week

Rain happens. Without a makeup week, one washout breaks the whole season. Put it in the middle, so you have time to use it.

If nothing gets rained out, make it a fun week. A scramble, a par-3 contest, or a night off.

Seed partners late

In week ten, pair the leader with the last-place player. Second with second-last. It tightens the standings right before the playoffs.

End with a final

The best leagues end loudly. A final match, with the whole league watching. Then dinner and awards.

Points system

Keep points simple. Here is one system that works.

ResultPoints
Win the night (stroke play)3
Second place2
Third place1
Match play win2
Match play halve1
Show up and finish1

That "show up" point matters. It rewards attendance, which is the hardest part of any league.

Weekly routine for the commissioner

Running the schedule takes about 20 minutes a week, if you stick to a routine.

  1. Two days before: send tee times and pairings.
  2. The day before: confirm numbers with the course.
  3. On the night: collect any weekly pot money.
  4. After golf: post standings.

A league app can cut steps three and four down to almost nothing. Scores go in on the course. Standings update on their own.

Handling odd weeks

Some weeks will not go to plan. Decide now how you handle them.

  • Holiday week. Mark it as a bye in advance.
  • Course closed. Use the makeup week.
  • Low turnout. Play it as a casual round. No points.

Read subs, no-shows and rainouts for full rules you can copy.

Choosing where to keep the schedule

The schedule should live where everyone can find it.

  • A shared calendar works for dates.
  • A group chat works for reminders.
  • An app or league software works for pairings, scores and standings.

Big leagues with divisions often use dedicated software. Golf League Guru lists auto pairings, custom handicaps and league communication. Squabbit's League Pro plan lists a season schedule builder.

For a small friends league, MATCHUPS leagues are free up to 10 players on iPhone. It does not support Android or GHIN, so check your group first.

Planning the final night

The last week is the one people talk about all winter. Plan it like an event.

  • Book a table for dinner after golf, or reserve a room at the course.
  • Order a trophy early. A cheap one with a plate for names is perfect. Add a new name every year.
  • Have small prizes ready: most improved, best single round, most skins won.
  • Say a few words. Thank the course staff and the commissioner.
  • Announce next season's start date before people leave.

That last point fills next year's league before winter even starts.

Copy this checklist

  • Season length chosen
  • Night and tee times confirmed with the course
  • Formats set for every week
  • Makeup week placed
  • Points system written down
  • Playoff and final format agreed
  • One place for scores and standings

Print it. Tick it. Play golf.
